James O. Fuqua papers, 1857-1883.

The collection consists of financial papers including receipts for the purchase of slaves by James O. Fuqua from the estate of Mary Boatner (1858-1858); a bond issued by East Baton Rouge Parish (1867); a capital stock certificate in the Baton Rouge, Grosse Tete and Opelousas Railroad Company (1867); and receipts for state, parish, and municipal taxes paid by Mrs. James O. Fuqua of Baton Rouge (1877-1878). Also included are two typescript copies of receipts for slaves (Apr., 1857, June, 1858), and a letter of R.J. Bowman concerning ownership of the slaves (n.d.). Papers of the law firm Fuqua and Callahan pertain to legal cases and other business matters. A letterpress copybook (1874-1879) records James O. Fuqua's legal correspondence. Personal papers consists of letters (1857-1883) from James Fuqua to his wife written during their courtship and subsequent marriage. Majority of the letters concern news of family and friends, health, and social activities. Civil War letters discuss secession (Jan. 24, 1861), war news, and lack of support from foreign powers for the Confederate States (Sept. 14, 1862) letter comments on the need to discipline a troublesome slave. Also among the personal papers is a journal kept by Jenny Foules during a vacation to New Orleans, Louisiana, describing social events and the sights of the city (Feb. 1857).

James Overton Fuqua was a slaveholder and property owner of East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. He was a member of the Baton Rouge law firm Fuqua and Callihan. A Confederate soldier, Fuqua was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh. He married Jenny M. Foules of Kingston, Miss., in October 1857. His son, Henry Luce Fuqua (1865-1926), served as governor of Louisiana, 1924-1926, and his daughter, Annie, married Thomas D. Boyd. From the description of James O. Fuqua papers, 1857-1883.
